About Mehtap Demir; Ethnomusicologist- Singer and Kemane (Turkish Bowed String Instrument) Player.

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Mehtap Demir has been teaching Ethnomusicology and Folklore Department which is established by her at Istanbul Unıversıty State Conservatory. Her Bacholer degree from Istanbul Technical University Turkish Music State Conservatory. Then, she had her master’s degree in Musicology from Istanbul University with the subject social interaction and music. Her PhD degree in Music Anthropology from Yeditepe University. Mehtap stayed in Jerusalem for two year during her fieldwork and studied the emigration and interaction of the cross-border music with Prof. Dr. Feza Tansuğ. It should be stated that Mehtap is one of the few unique female kemane players in Turkey. She has five solo Cd-Album and contribute mnay compilation works. Her Album names; Symphony of Turkish Folk Music, Sing Mehtap, Perfume of Asia Minor, Aquaphonic, Lulabies with Anadolian Melodies. 

In 2010, she took a major part in a musical documentary feature named My Sweet Canary (Ottoman Jews Roza Eskhanezi and Rebetiko Musi) which then happened to be an international project with a series of musical concerts in many countries in Europe & USA. Since then, Mehtap has been performing Rembetiko music, which is the creator of Aegean Culture with musicians from Israel and Greece who took part with her in My Sweet Canary project. They took place and performed at the prestigious music festivals all over the world such as SXSW and WOMEX (opening show 2012).

She directed and sang the multicultural project called "Yedi Cihan Kadınları" The women of the Jihanhas peretoire in many languages such as Greek, Ladino, Kurdish, Arabik, Macedonain, Pomak, Turkish and Aramic.

Another Project she created named Şahdeniz. This is an geoghraphical music project followed the music way from Azerbaijan, Turkey to Greece. 

Mehtap is proud of sharing the same stage with the world-famous female vocals such as Yasmin Levy, Savinna Yantaou, Mor Karbasi & Giota Negka, Farghna Qasımova, Sophia Papazolglu and representing the musical culture of Turkey by attending to the most popular music festivals in countries like Greece, France, Germany, Belgium, Israel, USA and so on.

She offers courses on ıntroduction social science, traditional folk music repertoire, Gender and music, Migration and Music, Culture Theories and Kemane. She has been continuing her academic life as an ethno-musician and kemane player by attending the international conferences, workshops and symposiums in different Countires.
